Liverpool stepped up and answered their critics by earning an impressive 1-0 away victory against Stoke City.
The team needed to deliver in the Capital One Cup first leg, and now have an important victory to take back to Anfield.
A week ago they won by the same scoreline against Sunderland, but either side of this came poor away losses against Watford and West Ham.
Stoke had been in good form recently, beating Manchester United easily at the Britannia on Boxing Day, but on this occasion they were second best.
Liverpool's defence shone, despite having so many injury problems to contend with. Former defender Jamie Carragher picked out veteran Kolo Toure as 'magnificent', while outspoken Burnley midfielder Joey Barton highlighted the impact of Lucas Leiva.
Great result & performance from Lfc in the circumstances! The great man Kolo Toure magnificent!!— Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) January 5, 2016
Thought Lucas was superb at CB for LFC. They look a far better side without a CF.— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) January 5, 2016
Liverpool had only 36 per cent possession in the fixture, with Jordon Ibe netting the only goal of the game from close range.
Stoke had only themselves to blame, failing to use the ball effectively, managing to land just two of 15 goalscoring attempts on target.
