Speaking to the 606 programme on BBC Radio 5 Live, Ian Wright has admitted that he would love to see Arsenal sign John Stones from Everton, as he is the perfect ball-playing defender for Arsene Wenger’s style of play.
Wright said: “I think Stones could play in a top team in any country. He is the kind of ball-playing defender Wenger would like. Would I love to see him there [Arsenal]? Of course I would.”
Stones is regarded as one of the best defensive prospects in world football, and has already established himself as a key player for both Everton and England ahead of the European Championships this summer.
There are still some questions over his style of play, and he can often try too hard to show off his skills on the ball, but at the age of just 21 that can go down to a naivety which he is sure to grow out of.
With Arsenal’s centre-back pairing needing rejuvenating soon - Per Mertesacker is 31 and Laurent Koscielny is 30 - Stones would be a logical signing given his strengths.
He would perfectly fit into the Gunners’ back-line, and his technical skills would mean he would not look out of place in a team led by Wenger.
It is hard to argue that he would not immediately be good enough to replace either of Mertesacker of Koscielny at centre-back, whilst Stones can also fill in at right-back if needed.
There have been no indications that Arsenal are preparing a move for Stones, but Wright is correct to suggest he would be a great signing for the Gunners in the coming years.
