The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder finally appears to have made his breakthrough at White Hart Lane?
Back in the summer many Tottenham Hotspur fans were desperate to see a quality new midfielder brought to White Hart Lane, but while chairman Daniel Levy was busy with new additions, that was one area of the field left unchanged.
In hindsight it was clear Levy and manager Mauricio Pochettino knew what they were doing, with Dele Alli and Eric Dier forming an outstanding – if somewhat surprising – partnership in the centre of the field.
The resurgence of Mousa Dembele also came at the perfect time, but now another player’s form could save Tottenham millions next summer.
As well as the trio of Alli, Dier and Dembele have done this season, Tottenham may well have sought to further strengthen their midfield to ensure every eventuality was covered for in 2016 and beyond. But Tom Carroll’s emergence this season has thrown another interesting proposition into the mix.
At 23, and with Alli surpassing all expectations this season, it seemed Carroll’s time at White Hart Lane may be coming to an end sooner rather than later. However, the player himself clearly had other ideas.
Against Everton on Sunday Carroll was simply sensational, spraying passes around the pitch with ease and playing with a confidence that suggested more Pochettino magic had been worked on the training field and in the dressing room.
Of course Tottenham fans will be wary of getting too excited too soon, but here is a player who is thriving on the chance to impress in the absence of Dembele, and at this rate Spurs could be building one of the most exciting young midfield units not just in the country, but potentially in Europe.
