Some fans believe Aston Villa being relegated would be best for the club.
Villa are sitting at the foot of the Premier League table following defeat to relegation rivals Sunderland, but Stan Collymore has told talkSPORT that fans should not be so accepting of a drop down to the second tier.
When a caller claimed it is time Villa were relegated to the Championship, Collymore said: “That’s what Nottingham Forest said. That’s what Sheffield Wednesday said. That’s what Leeds United said. And that’s what Ipswich Town said. They are all still there!”
Fans believe that dropping to the second tier would give Villa the perfect opportunity to rebuild and return to the Premier League as a stronger team, with a year out of the limelight enough to turn the club around.
However, Collymore is not convinced that relegation will bring certain promotion straight back to the top flight, and has named four other sides who have failed to get back to the Premier League after being dropped to the Championship.
Nottingham Forest, Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds United and Ipswich are all still Championship clubs after their relegation from the top tier, and whilst there are occasional glimpses of hope, it is hard to say that any of those teams will be promoted this season.
Villa have a squad which would struggle in the Championship, and whilst relegation could be the saviour of the club, it will not be the instant turnaround that many fans believe will happen.
