Liverpool started the New Year with a 2-0 loss at the hands of West Ham, and Stan Collymore has told talkSPORT that he expects Jurgen Klopp to have a major clear out of the players who were bought in under previous managers.
The former striker said: “This is a guy who built an exciting young side (at Dortmund), but he built this side with players who hung on his every word. There are obviously players at Liverpool who were bought by other managers, that he is going to want to get out of the club. He is not going to be bringing in players with potential, he has the clout to bring in top quality European footballers. They will go to Liverpool to play under Jurgen Klopp.”
Klopp proved his talents at Borussia Dortmund, both as a tactical manager and in the transfer market, and Liverpool fans have big hopes he can bring in a number of stars this month.
There is no area in this current Reds’ squad which is the required level for a Liverpool team, although signing a new goalkeeper, centre-back and striker are the main areas which need improvement.
Collymore believes that much of Klopp’s success at Dortmund came down to him building a squad who hung on his every word, which is a situation he has not been in at Anfield having inherited a team of players bought by other managers.
They do not have the same faith in him as his own signings would have, and this January will be vital for Klopp to start building a team in his own vision, with players who buy into his philosophy.
Collymore is expecting top quality players will be heading to Liverpool to play under Klopp, and that is exactly what fans of the Merseyside club want to be hearing as the transfer window opens.
