Per Mertesacker explains what he told Arsenal teammates against Newcastle

The Gunners moved two points ahead of Leicester City with the vital win.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Per Mertesacker has revealed what he told his Arsenal teammates throughout Saturday’s clash with Newcastle United.

The Gunners ran out 1-0 winners at the Emirates, with a goal from defender Laurent Koscielny handing them all three points.

They were arguably undeserved for Arsene Wenger’s side, with the away team having had many of the best opportunities throughout the game.

Nevertheless Arsenal maintained their focus to keep the scores at 0-0, and managed to secure the win that took them two points clear at the top of the table. And Mertesacker says that was the message he conveyed throughout, to stay focused as their attacking talent can always get a goal.

“We never lost our lost our focus or our passion, and neither did the fans,” he told

“We believe we can be a good team if we put the effort in. That is what I kept saying to the lads, to keep a clean sheet as long as possible and we did it all the way through.

“We are a threat offensively and could have scored more in the end. We need to share the ball better at times in front of the goal. We are pretty delighted with the performance.”

Arsenal will now firmly believe that they can be title winners come the end of the season given the position they now hold.

With Wenger expected to add players in January, and have his star men back soon, they will be confident of maintaining or even improving their form moving forward.

And although two points may be nothing with the league the way it is, they will be also boosted that they have maintained their challenge despite a number of big injuries hitting their squad this season.
