Jamie Carragher raves about Tottenham's Dele Alli, claims he surpassed Everton's Barkley

Jamie Carragher has spoken highly of Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli.

Pundit Jamie Carragher has told Sky Sports, as quoted by the Daily Mail, that he thinks Tottenham's Dele Alli surpassed Ross Barkley against Everton on Sunday.

Everton and Spurs played out a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park on Sunday evening, with a superb volley from Alli cancelling out a stunning strike from ex-Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon, who had opened the scoring for the Toffees.

The two teams who have drawn the most games in the Premier League this season somewhat unsurprisingly played out another draw, but one player stole the headlines again.

Midfielder Alli has racked up five goals and three assists in his first Premier League campaign, and his latest goal was another exceptional piece of skill, as he took the ball down on his chest from a raking Toby Alderweireld pass, before smashing the ball beyond Tim Howard on the volley.

The 19-year-old, who initially signed for Spurs in January 2015 before spending the rest of last season on loan at MK Dons, has taken the Premier League by storm - and Jamie Carragher believes he now has to start for England at Euro 2016 next summer.

As quoted by the Daily Mail, pundit Carragher told Sky Sports after the game that Alli has been one of Tottenham's best players this season, and believes that his Premier League form combined with his stunning goal against France in November means he should start for Roy Hodgson's England.

Carragher also added that he felt Alli surpassed Everton midfielder Ross Barkley on Sunday, and could beat him to a place in the England starting line-up at Euro 2016.

"You think about his performance and his goal against France. Now I expect him to be in the England squad, I actually think now he’s in the team," said Carragher. "I think Roy [Hodgson] and Gary [Neville] they play three in there. The one who has been playing regularly is Ross Barkley; Dele Alli has surpassed Ross today."

"Now I’m a big fan of Barkley but they might be the two who are fighting for one position, that attacking midfield role, if they play three in there. The way Alli performed in the France game, the goal he got, you would have to say it’s up to someone else now to take that position off him."

"I think there’s always a player who comes on sort of late in terms of the international squad I think he’s certainly one of them. Every time you talk about Spurs you think he’s been one of the best players," he added.
