Belgian press criticise performance of virtually invisible Liverpool star Christian Benteke

Christian Benteke was poor for Liverpool against West Ham.

Christian Benteke's poor display for Liverpool against West Ham has created headlines his homeland.

Belgian newspaper Nieuwsblade ran an editorial on it's website, asking if his performance in the 2-0 loss was his weakest since signing for the Reds.

Benteke, who days earlier had netted a winning goal against Sunderland, was second best to everything at Upton Park and the reaction to his display has been negative.

The article describes Benteke as 'virtually invisible', and went onto criticise him for being so isolated up front that he was barely accessible.

His five shots, of which none hit the target, were also highlighted as evidence of a listless display, as well as the fact he won only two of 13 aerial duels he contested.

Fortunately for Benteke, his international rival Romelu Lukaku did not score at the weekend for Everton - but this was a rarity, and it is the Toffees striker who has shown he could be first choice for Marc Wilmots' Red Devils this summer.

If Benteke wants to start for his country then he will need to produce better performances than the one he did at the weekend, and not allow himself to be so easily beaten in the air by opponents.
