17 clearances, 7 duels won: West Ham star James Collins superb in Liverpool victory

West Ham United’s James Collins was excellent against Liverpool.

West Ham defender James Collins had a superb afternoon as his side beat Liverpool 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Hammers headed into the clash having ended an eight-game winless run with a 2-1 win over Southampton last Monday, a result which left them eighth in the Premier League table.

They knew victory over Liverpool would see them leapfrog their rivals and they got off to the perfect start when Michail Antonio nodded them in front after just ten minutes.

The Reds applied plenty of pressure throughout yet West Ham held strong and made the points safe when Andy Carroll scored a second-half header ten minutes after the interval.

The target man will rightfully earn the plaudits for the way he led the line but West Ham’s defence deserved huge credit with Collins in particular a real rock throughout.

As Opta stats show, Collins featured heavily at the back for West Ham and made a number of vital contributions over a range of key defensive categories.

The 32-year-old won two tackles, two interceptions, four headers, made four ball recoveries, won seven defensive duels and completed a whopping 17 clearances over the course of the 90 minutes.

Collins has featured regularly in the first team of late, stepping in for the injured Winston Reid and proving exactly why he is valued as an excellent and reliable squad player.

Liverpool’s Christian Benteke simply got no joy out of either Collins or Angelo Ogbonna as the two centre-backs stood firm and won more than their fair share of battles.

The victory takes West Ham momentarily up to fifth in the table, three points shy of the top four.
