Stuart Pearce raves about Antonio... and compares Lanzini to Joe Cole

The former West Ham defender has heaped praise on the duo.

Stuart Pearce has heaped praise on West Ham United winger Michail Antonio after the 25-year-old netted for the second game in a row against Liverpool on Saturday afternoon, according to BBC Football.

And the former West Ham defender believes Antonio embodies the 'modern-day wide player.'

Pearce has managed the Hammers forward before - working with him at Nottingham Forest - and has now sung his praises after a commanding display against the Reds.

Pearce told the BBC after the east London side's 2-0 win: "That is what Antonio can do. One minute he is two yards away from his full-back making a slide tackle but a few seconds later he is getting in the opponents' box and scoring a header.

"That is what a modern-day wide player has to do."

Meanwhile, the former Hammers defender also praised Manuel Lanzini, comparing him to West Ham favourite Joe Cole.

He added: "I'm watching Manuel Lanzini but seeing Joe Cole in the way he moves the ball. West Ham know exactly when to slow the play down and were unlucky not to make it 2-0."

One attribute West Ham fans will certainly hope Lanzini doesn't share with Cole is his fitness issues.

Cole was injury prone throughout his career and the Argentine's injury against Liverpool serves as a blow to the east London side.

That said, the return of Dimitri Payet more than makes up for the loss, while Antonio's recent form can be very useful indeed at Upton Park if it lasts the rest of the season. More good times ahead for West Ham?
