The manager is looking to bring his former Borussia Dortmund stalwart to Anfield.
The Reds boss is expected to be busy during the January transfer window as he looks to boost his side and get them pushing for a top four place.
That desire to improve the squad is sure to have been increased after Saturday’s 2-0 loss to West Ham, with the German criticising his players performances following the loss.
There are several areas of his team which could do with boosting, with his defence and forward line both struggling this season.
It seems though he is determined to improve the quality available to him in midfield, and has set his sights on former star Ilkay Gundogan according to Sportmediaset report.
However, a big stumbling block for any move will be his reported price tag, with the Germans wanting at least £22million for one of their prize assets.
The Reds would also face big competition for the German midfielder, with Serie A giants Juventus also keen on adding him to their ranks.
