Report: Southampton closing in on Ignacio Camacho, Newcastle also interested

Southampton and Newcastle United are reportedly interested in Malaga midfielder Ignacio Camacho.

Southampton are interested in signing Ignacio Camacho from Malaga, according to The Mirror.

It has been reported by the British newspaper that the Saints will have to wait until the summer to sign the Spain international defensive midfielder from Malaga.

The Spanish club do not want to let Camacho leave in the January transfer window, but, states the report in The Mirror, they "are close to agreeing with the Saints a priority option on him for the next transfer window".

According to the report, Southampton’s Premier League rivals, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, have also checked out the 25-year-old.

However, claims the Mirror, neither Tottenham nor Newcastle have been encouraged by Malaga’s response.

Camacho has been on the books of Malaga since 2011 when he joined them from La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid.

The 25-year-old, who has earned one cap for the Spain national team, struggled with injuries earlier in the campaign.

In five La Liga appearances for Malaga so far this season, Camacho has created five chances, has a pass accuracy of 75% and a shot accuracy of 25%, and has won 10 headers, one dribble and 11 tackles.
