The Sky Sports pundit is not impressed with Benteke at the moment.
The Reds striker arrived at the club from Aston Villa in the summer and has not yet got off the ground at Anfield.
Benteke did go into the game with two winning goals in his previous two appearances but he aalso missed two sitters in the same games.
So far he has netted seven times for Liverpool in 20 appearances and Reds fans would have been hoping for more.
Speaking on Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday yesterday (02/01/2016) Paul Merson suggested his theory as to why Benteke is struggling to emulate his form at Aston Villa - he simply hasn't stepped it up a level.
The former Aston Villa player stated:
"He hasn't really brought much more to the table. He might say 'well what do you want me to do? Do you want me to run around and not score or score winning goals every week?'
"That's the Catch-22 at the moment. But he has missed the two easiest ones.
"I think he has got to do more. Sometimes I think he still thinks he is playing at Aston Villa.
"At Villa he was going to play every week and I think he got into that situation when he went out and played like he is now. He hasn't got out of that yet."
Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp are going to need more from a striker. Benteke will need to start putting more of a shift in if he is to be a hit under the management of the German taskmaster.
With the likes of Divock Origi, Daniel Sturridge and Danny Ings all waiting in the wings or injured the Belgian knows he cannot rest on laurels at Anfield.
He needs to up his game soon, or risk getting acquainted to the bench.
