Over the course of the 90 minutes at the Stadium of Light, hosts Sunderland had 45% of the possession, took 13 shots of which six were on target.
Visitors Villa had 55% of the possession, took eight shots of which three were on target, and earned three corners.
Sunderland are second from bottom in the Premier League table at the moment with 15 points from 20 matches, four points behind 17th-placed Swansea City.
Sam Allardyce’s side will return to action next weekend when they take on Arsenal away from home in the third round of the FA Cup.
