Wolverhampton Wanderers supporters were quick to praise goalkeeper Carl Ikeme on Twitter following his superb performance during his side’s 1-0 win at Brighton and Hove Albion on Friday afternoon.
It has been a testing Championship season for Wolves thus far, littered with inconsistencies as a number of impressive wins have been cancelled out by bitter disappointments for Kenny Jackett’s men.
The former Millwall manager was tipped by manager to be the next managerial casualty following Wolves’ 3-2 home defeat to Leeds United, but a positive festive period has lifted the mood around Molineaux.
A tight 1-0 home victory over Reading was followed up a solid 2-0 win at Charlton Athletic, and yesterday’s success at promotion hopefuls Brighton made it three in the row for Wolves.
The West Midlands outfit’s goal came in fortuitous circumstances as Brighton’s Connor Goldson put through his own net, but there was nothing lucky about Wolves’ defensive capabilities.
The visitors have been so open at times this season, but they were brilliant at the back at the Amex Stadium, keeping Brighton at arm’s length and halting their attacking threats at source.
The entire back four played well, and one man in particular who made some fine interventions was goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, who dealt with six efforts on goal and number of crosses into the box.
The 29-year-old has often come in for some criticism from the Wolves supporters, and he repaid the faith shown in him by his manager with a match-winning performance.
Taking to social networking site Twitter after the game, Wolves supporters showed their appreciation.
Ikeme was brilliant for #WWFC. Exactly why he needs to stay as first choice even when Martínez is fit.— Dan O'Hagan (@danohagan) January 1, 2016
