Liverpool suffered yet another defeat at the hands of West Ham United on Saturday afternoon.
Steve McManaman believes Liverpool need to strengthen their squad in every department as they lack real quality in a number of key areas, he told the Fletch and Sav show on BT Sport.
The Reds spent heavily last summer and brought in seven new players, including striker Christian Benteke from Aston Villa and Roberto Firmino from Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim.
In spite of the heavy outlay, the squad remains unbalanced and there appears to be a distinct lack of quality in key areas - illustrated by their inconsistent form this season.
Jurgen Klopp’s side’s latest defeat to West Ham United leaves them momentarily five points short of the top four, a gap which could be extended to eight points by the end of the weekend.
Commenting on their squad quality, McManaman feels Klopp needs to strengthen all over as the popular German coach struggles to choose his best eleven due to such erratic form.
"I just don’t think the squad is as good as we probably all think. They need to strengthen all over the field, they let silly goals in and have only kept two clean sheets, the forward line is not strong enough," he explained.
"I wouldn’t know what the best eleven is and I don’t think he [Klopp] knows. He chops and changes his teams. Coutinho seems to be the standout player but Lallana isn’t giving enough and Firmino certainly isn’t and he wants more from Benteke."
Liverpool’s latest defeat at West Ham is their third in their last four away games, having suffered defeats at Newcastle United and Watford over the past four weeks.
Buying in January is always a risk when considering the overinflated prices yet, without an addition or two this month, the likelihood of reaching the top four remains very slim.
