The Gunners have been strongly linked with the Southampton midfielder in recent weeks, with the Mirror claiming he is their number one target in the January transfer window.
He does not fit the typical Wenger model though; with his large, tough tackling style the opposite of the small, technical players Wenger has moved to sign in recent years.
And Hoddle believes that the Kenyan’s passing ability may be one factor that may stop Wenger making a move for the midfielder.
“I know Arsene Wenger; he wants a defensive minded player,” he told Fletch and Sav.
“He played with two in Monaco when I played with him but they have to play and see a quick picture and that makes it harder to get that type of player.”
“I’m not sure that Wanyama sees that quick enough for Arsene.”
While Wanyama’s passing ability is something to be questioned, it is possible that Wenger is not too concerned by that given the others players who can do that for his side.
They are lacking a tough tackling, midfield presence with Francis Coquelin bringing a different style to the defensive midfield position.
Instead, perhaps he is looking to add some physicality to his side, similar to what they had when former captain Patrick Vieira was a dominant force in the side.
