Manchester United have made the surprise decision to recall striker Will Keane from his loan at Championship side Preston North End.
SkySports reported Keane has been brought back to add depth to United's attacking ranks, and not because they are unhappy with his Preston spell, and want to arrange an alternative loan elsewhere.
Disappointingly, Keane has struggled to score goals at Preston, with just two in 22 games. It is not the first time he has failed to shine in the Championship, with similarly unproductive experiences at QPR and Sheffield Wednesday previously.
A move to bring back James Wilson from Brighton may have made more sense, but he has been with United much of the season and Louis van Gaal evidently feels otherwise.
Keane is now 22-years-old, and this could be make or break for him at Old Trafford if he now gets a chance.
A former England under-21 international, he was very highly regarded at the club before suffering a torn ACL three seasons ago.
Reserves coach Warren Joyce told United's official website last month that he saw promising signs in the striker despite his lack of goals.
He said: "It was a really well-taken goal.I watched him again at the weekend as well. His movement was very good and he looks better and more confident.
"You forget how long he was out injured. It disrupted and delayed his progression massively so he is aiming to make up for lost time. He's looking a lot more like his old self really.
"Preston have played 4-3-3 and Will has been playing in a wider role but he's an intelligent footballer anyway and is taking up good positions and being a threat.
"His general play has been good. Obviously, the kid would like to score more goals than he has but I think that is the next step for him really."
