Former England international Darren Anderton used Twitter to criticise Liverpool's limp performance against West Ham.
The Reds were defeated 2-0 in Saturday's early game against the Hammers, and Anderton believes the result is because of the lack of quality in the Liverpool team, urging manager Jurgen Klopp to get to work addressing it now the transfer window is open.
Liverpool need to buy.. And buy big.. So average..!!— Darren Anderton (@Darren_Anderton) January 2, 2016
Anderton's call for Liverpool to buy big, is not so easy in January. Clubs are reluctant to sell star players in the summer months, and it gets even harder to convince them to do so mid-season.
The attraction of working with manager Jurgen Klopp is a major help for Liverpool, as opposed to Brendan Rodgers who did not have an international reputation, but there is real uncertainty whether the Reds will have Champions League football to play next season, and players may prefer to wait for the summer when they know either way.
On the evidence of their away display against West Ham, you would think that it is more unlikely than in their favour that the Reds will finish inside the top four.
