Aston Villa fans rip into Micah Richards on Twitter after Sunderland defeat

The 27-year-old was lambasted after another poor performance for Villa against Sunderland.

If Aston Villa need to rely on Micah Richards for leadership, they're doomed.

They do - and they are.

Indeed, Villa produced another lifeless display on Saturday afternoon as Sam Allardyce's Sunderland side beat them 3-1 at the Stadium of Light. And Richards was at his typical worst at centre-back.

It would be naive to pin all of the blame on the skipper, of course. Everyone at Villa from the owner to the kitman - and every single player - needs to take responsibility.

But supporters were left furious with Richards once again as the 27-year-old forfeited his duties as a captain and defender. There is little surprise that the Villa man's return to the side has prompted two defeats in a row.

There is also little surprise that Richards struggled at centre-back against Sunderland. Many are calling for him to go to right-back if he has to start...

Recently, there was also the embarrassment of the Aston Villa captain arguing with Ian Wright on Twitter after the BBC pundit's fair criticism of his performance against Norwich City. Villa fans replied en masse to let the defender know he was very much in the wrong.
