The former Liverpool defender has also claimed that Bournemouth and Norwich City will not go down to the Championship, while suggesting that Aston Villa and Sunderland are doomed.
When asked which side will join Sunderland and Aston Villa in the Premier League bottom three at the end of the 2015-16 campaign, Nicol told ESPN FC: “I have got to go with Newcastle.
“I am thinking Bournemouth, but they have got a real fighting spirit about them and they have got some great results.
“Norwich will just hang onto everybody’s coattails and fight all day long, whereas Newcastle - they get a result now and again, but generally they almost like pack in half the time.”
Villa are at the bottom in the Premier League table at the moment with eight points from 19 matches.
Sunderland are four points above the Villans in 19th, while Newcastle are third from bottom in the standings with 17 points.
Swansea City, Bournemouth and Norwich City are all candidates for relegation to the Championship at the moment.
There is a long way to go this season, but it looks like Villa are doomed. Sunderland still do have a chance of escaping the drop, but only if manager Sam Allardyce is able to make good signings in the January transfer window.
