Roberto Mancini is hoping to bolster his current side by buying a player he knows very well.
Despite being a stalwart of the City side since he moved to the Etihad Stadium in 2008, the 30-year-old has endured a difficult season this time around. Injuries, as well as the form of Bacary Sagna, have restricted Zabaleta to just five appearances in all competitions for the Citizens.
And with the defender's contract entering its final 18 months (via The Sun), the Argentinian may decide that he needs a fresh challenge, having won every domestic honour with the club.
A move to San Siro would present the full-back with the opportunity to link up with former City boss Roberto Mancini, who has been performing wonders with the Nerazzurri. Having been painfully lacklustre for the majority of last season - which resulted in the team missing out on European football - the side now lead the way this term, one point clear of Fiorentina.
However, Zabaleta may find it just as difficult to break into Inter's side, should he move. Although they have only scored 23 goals in 17 games, their defence has been excellent, conceding just 11 times.
