"I said a few weeks ago that Newcastle need a new centre-back and a centre-forward at the very least, and that still stands without a doubt,” the former Newcastle striker has told BBC Sport.
Newcastle have been disappointing so far this season and are in danger of getting relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.
Steve McClaren’s side are third from bottom in the league table at the moment with 17 points from 19 matches.
The Magpies are just two points behind 17th-placed Swansea City, but they are very much among the candidates to go down.
Newcastle have struggled to score goals and have also conceded more than they should have. McClaren’s team have found the opposition net just 19 times and have shipped 34 goals.
While the need for Newcastle to make defensive and attacking forwards cannot be denied, the problem is whether the Magpies will be able to sign quality players in those areas in the middle of the season.
