Although the 19-year-old is currently playing non-league football, Sunderland and Wednesday have apparently seen enough in the youngster to suggest he is ready to make the step up to playing professionally.
Crystal Palace have already had Smith on trial, as he has made such a big impact in the Southern Premier League.
Smith has scored five times and claimed eight assists, despite only being in Hitchin’s first team since February.
Although the youngster would be unlikely to go straight into Wednesday or Sunderland’s line-up, the duo have both seen enough potential to suggest he could make the grade in the future.
The stock of non-league players has risen considerably in recent times, with a number of success stories proving their worth in the Premier League.
The likes of Manchester United’s Chris Smalling, Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy and Queens Park Rangers’ Charlie Austin have all made an impact in England’s top tier having been scouted playing part-time football, and there is a hope that Smith’s career could take a similar path.
