Shackell had to be replaced by Ryan Shotton in the first half of Derby’s match against Leeds United, and his absence was a blow for the Midlands outfit.
Derby could only pick up a 2-2 draw at Elland Road, with their defence looking uncharacteristically porous in Shackell’s absence.
And Clement said of the centre back’s injury: “I don’t think it is too bad. He jarred the ankle slightly and the initial prognosis is that it isn’t too serious, but we will need to have a look at it tomorrow.”
Derby have built their success this season upon the solidarity of their backlline.
Shackell has formed a brilliant partnership with Richard Keogh at the heart of the Rams’ defence.
Derby have conceded just 15 goals in their 24 Championship matches to date - leaving Middlesbrough as the only team in the division with a better defensive record than them.
The Rams’ next match comes against top of the table Boro on Saturday, meaning Shackell will have to make a quick recovery if he is to be available for the crunch tie.
