Sunderland take on Liverpool this evening hoping to earn a crucial victory to end a difficult 2015 on a high note.
The Black Cats can move eight points clear of bottom side Aston Villa with a win, although even then they would be four points from safety.
Presently in 19th place, rivals Newcastle are in 18th with 17 points compared to Sunderland's 12.
Winning will not be easy against Liverpool, who have a chance to move level on points with rivals Manchester United.
They are coming off the back of a hard fought win over Leicester City, and will be keen to bounce back from their last away game, an embarrassing loss to Watford.
The Reds are currently in 10th position but could move up to seventh with a victory at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland are on a losing streak, defeated in their last four matches, and Sam Allardyce's side need to start picking up points.
