Tony Cottee praises James Collins' performances for West Ham

The defender has been impressive when called upon by Slaven Bilic.

Speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, Tony Cottee has praised West Ham defender James Collins for his performances.

The defender has found himself very much a squad player this season, with Winston Reid, Angelo Ogbonna and James Tomkins preferred ahead of him.

With all of those players picking up injuries though, he has been used often by manager Slaven Bilic, and often impressed with a series of accomplished displays.

Cottee is one of those who has liked what he sees, saying that the defender is the type of guy that everyone wants in their team.

“What I like about Ginge [James Collins] is he puts his body on the line and he’s a fantastic defender,” he told Soccer Saturday.

“He always seems to be not quite in the right position but always makes up for it. If you look at some of the things he does, it’s always desperate, last ditch defending.”

“He’s the type of guy you want in your team, you could argue he’s fourth choice but he’s a great squad player.”

While Collins has impressed this year so far, he is still likely only to be a bit part player at best when West Ham are at full fitness.

Slaven Bilic has clearly demonstrated his desire for the Hammers to play better football under him, and sadly the likes of Collins don’t fit into that as well as he would hope.

Angelo Ogbonna, who has barely featured, is a more natural fit into that style; while there is also high hopes for breakout star Reece Oxford.

So despite impressing, and being rewarded with a new deal, the Welshman may see his long term future away from the Hammers regardless.
