Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard said on BT Sport 1 on Monday evening that Manchester City are the favourites to win the Premier League title this season.
Gerrard, who left Liverpool for Major League Soccer outfit Los Angeles Galaxy in the summer transfer window, believes that Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are also in the title race.
However, the former England international midfielder does not fancy Leicester City to go all the way, although he does include them among the teams who are in the running.
“I think there is an opportunity for six, seven sides, the chance to go and challenge for the Premier League, the likes of Arsenal and Spurs,” said Gerrard on BT Sport 1 on Monday evening following the coverage of the Premier League game between Manchester United and Chelsea.
“City are looking favourites at the moment, I think. Leicester will eventually drop away just because of the size of their squad.”
Arsenal are at the top of the Premier League table at the moment with 39 points from 19 matches. The Gunners are a point clear of Leicester City, who are currently second and a have a game in hand.
That match is against the Citizens, who are four points behind leaders Arsenal in fourth and level on points with third-placed Tottenham. City have the strongest squad in the Premier League and will be many observers’ favourites.
Arsenal are their main challengers, but it would not be wise to write off Tottenham. Spurs have lost just twice in the league all season and have won their last three Premier League matches.
It is this consistency that could prove to be crucial for Mauricio Pochettino’s side as the season progresses.
