The Canaries heaped more misery on Remi Garde's men on Monday afternoon as they condemned their relegation rivals to a 2-0 loss at Carrow Road.

The Aston Villa players showed their frustration during the closing stages of Monday’s match at Norwich City as a 2-0 defeat saw their club-record winless run in the league extended to 18 games.

Jonny Howson opened the scoring in the 24th-minute after taking advantage of some calamitous Villa defending to fire home from Nathan Redmond’s cross, before more problems with the visitors’ backline allowed Dieumerci Mbokani to seal Norwich the win three minutes from time with a headed finish.

Remi Garde’s men rarely looked like troubling their relegation rivals on the day and tensions boiled over in stoppage-time as the two sides became involved in a melee after Ashley Westwood sent Redmond into the advertising hoardings with a hard challenge.

Both Westwood and skipper Micah Richards were booked for their part in the ruckus and the former will now miss Saturday’s trip to Sunderland along with Jordan Ayew, who was also cautioned minutes earlier for a rash tackle on Gary O’Neill.

The loss means Villa now sit 11 points from safety at the foot of the Premier League table at the halfway stage of the season, and having failed to record a top-flight victory since the opening day, their survival hopes are looking increasingly slim.

Norwich, meanwhile, began the day sitting just outside the drop zone, level on points with 18th-placed Newcastle United on goal difference, but a second win in three games sees them move into 15th on 20 points.
