Newcastle United fans react to Karl Darlow's performance on Twitter

Goalkeeping Gloves

Karl Darlow disappointed in Newcastle's loss to West Brom.

Karl Darlow has waited a long time for his Newcastle United debut - and all concerned will be reflecting that the anticipation was not worthwhile.

Darlow was loaned back to Nottingham Forest last season after his transfer, and this time around has been third choice - playing for the under-21s.

He was given the nod by manager Steve McClaren ahead of Rob Elliott, suffering from illness, for the trip to West Brom on Sunday, and his role was costly.

He conceded a second half goal from Darren Fletcher which he really should have saved, condemning Newcastle to a 1-0 defeat in the process.

Steve McClaren told The Chronicle after the game: "It wasn’t easy for him, but you’ve got to be able to step in and we always say if you’re going to be called upon, you’ve got to be ready.

“It’s always a difficult place to come with so many things to have to deal with. I think he’ll be disappointed with the goal, but in general he came in and did the job.”

His mistake was difficult for McClaren to ignore, but he would have been better off focusing on the team's lack of incision up front.

They managed only two shots on target the entire game, failing to score for the second game in a row.

With Newcastle in the relegation zone, there is little sympathy for the manager at present, but Darlow did elicit some after his sorry display - other fans were more ruthless in their assessment.
