The 34-year-old was criticised after another abysmal display at the back.
Sunderland fans have returned to their usual state of disappointment. Or, rather, they have been returned to it.
Indeed, after a promising mini-resurgence under Sam Allardyce recently, the Black Cats have slipped back into old habits.
Their last win - a 2-0 victory against Stoke City - has since been followed by four straight defeats. And the worst of the bad bunch came at Manchester City on Boxing Day, when Allardyce's men were sliced open to lose 4-1 at the Etihad.
Subsequently, Sunderland find themselves five points behind bitter rivals Newcastle United - and five points off safety.
The same old culprits are delivering the same kind of performances and John O'Shea found himself receiving huge criticism for his display at City on Saturday.
The 34-year-old has experience to boot and has graced the very highest level of the game. But none of that seems to show when he does what he did against Manchester City. Simple things like fighting for a ball or sticking a leg out to try and block a shot simply weren't part of O'Shea's repertoire and Sunderland fans voiced their frustration on Twitter.
Here's how supporters reacted to a very disappointing day indeed for the club - and a very disappointing display indeed from their leader at the back...
Frustrating thing is we will create chances. But our defence is just laughable led by our legendary 'leader on the pitch' John O'Shea #safc— Jon Stokoe (@jonstokoe) December 26, 2015
Would be happy if Sunderland just tore O'Shea and Coates' contracts up.— Crichton (@MattyCrichton) December 26, 2015

John o Shea has been expired for a long time now. Go home— Abdurahman (@absali98) December 26, 2015
And John O'shea is one of the worst things to ever happen to our club.— Jake (@Jake_Rowan) December 26, 2015
