Tony Cottee urges Arsenal to protect Mesut Ozil

The German has been in fine form for the Gunners so far this season.

Speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, Tony Cottee has urged Arsenal to protect Mesut Ozil in the second half of the season.

The German has been in fine form for the Gunners, leading the Premier League assists charts by some distance.

It has been an excellent campaign for him so far, with many saying he is finally repaying the big fee they paid Real Madrid to sign him in 2013.

There are fears he could pick up an injury though with Arsene Wenger having lost several big stars to injuries already, and Cottee has urged them to protect their star in the second half of the campaign.

They’ve got to protect him a little bit,” he told Soccer Saturday.

“You’re going to need him in the big Champions League and Premier League games.”

“You’ve got to manage players. Players do get burnt out and you’ve got to keep them fresh. If they can keep this lad fit, he’s been absolutely fantastic.”

With Arsenal having suffered a number of big injuries, it would not be surprising to see Arsene Wenger hand Ozil a rest to try and protect him.

However, with his squad paper thin at the moment though, there aren’t many players available to him that can replace the German's infleunce.

Aaron Ramsey might fancy is chances in the number ten role, and perhaps a signing or two in the January transfer window could see the Welshman given a shot to spare Ozil.
