Everton are underachieving this season believes Tony Cottee

The Blues were 1-0 winners over Newcastle United on Saturday evening.

Speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, Tony Cottee has admitted that Everton are underachieving so far this season.

The Blues are currently 9th in the table after 18 games, following a 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Saturday.

After a difficult opening ten games, they were expected to surge up the table, but a number of indifferent displays against sides they would expect to beat have left them sitting in mid-table.

That has seen them come in for criticism, and speaking before the win at St James Park, Cottee says they have been underachieving this season.

“Everton should be up there with Spurs. They should be in the top four. They are underachieving,” he told Soccer Saturday.

“They’ve got to kill games off, I love Roberto Martinez, but the one criticism he’s always been open to is defensively.”

“At Everton he’s done a great job but I want more defensive stability. Stop conceding silly goals and kill games off.”

While Everton have been disappointing in recent weeks, the open nature of the league means several positive results can see them rise up the table.

26 points leaves them just three points behind 6th placed Manchester United, and four behind Crystal Palace in 5th, while Tottenham are nine points ahead in 4th.

Roberto Martinez’s side would be confident of rising up the table with a string of wins then, something that is very much possible given the form the likes of Romelu Lukaku have enjoyed so far.
