Arsenal went down 4-0 to Southampton in the Premier League on Boxing Day.

Former Derby County and Leicester City midfielder Robbie Savage has criticised Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker’s performance against Southampton on BT Sport 1 on Saturday evening.

Towards the end of the Premier League game between the two sides at St. Mary’s Stadium, Savage, who was co-commentating, said: “I have got to say that against the pace, Mertesacker has been absolutely awful tonight. Terrible.”

Mertesacker started the match and played for the entire 90 minutes, as Arsenal suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat.

The German central defender had a pass accuracy of 87%, attempted one dribble, did not go for any tackle, won 50% of his headers, and made two interceptions and three clearances.

Over the course of the 90 minutes at St. Mary’s Stadium, hosts Southampton had just 35% of the possession, took 14 shots of which just five were on target, and earned three corners.

Visitors Arsenal had 65% of the possession, took seven shots of which four were on target, and earned four corners.

Arsene Wenger’s side are second in the Premier League table at the moment with 36 points from 18 matches, just two points behind leaders Leicester City.
