Newcastle are reportedly hoping to sign Bordeaux's Henri Saivet imminently.
According to The Chronicle, Newcastle are lining up a deal for Bordeaux star Henri Saivet - and could complete a transfer for him next week.
The Magpies have struggled to find consistency this season, as whilst they have beaten the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham, they still sit just two points clear of the relegation zone.
Manager Steve McClaren needs reinforcements in January, and it seems like Newcastle are set to target another French star.
Newcastle have done plenty of shopping in France over the years, but it's been something of a mixed bag. The likes of Mathieu Debuchy and Yohan Cabaye were roaring successes, but players like Remi Cabella and Sylvain Marveaux have flattered to deceive.
Now though, The Chronicle report that Newcastle are nearing a deal for Bordeaux midfielder Henri Saivet, despite interest from some of their Premier League rivals.
It's stated that Saivet, 25, is Newcastle's top target, and he could even join the Magpies as early as next week, as soon as the transfer window opens.
The Frenchman started out his career as a winger, but has reinvented himself as more of a central midfielder, becoming a key player for Bordeaux of late.
An athletic midfielder, Saivet would certainly provide some energy to the centre of Newcastle's midfield - an area which has been a problem for Steve McClaren so far this term - whilst it would also give Newcastle a fast start to the January transfer window.
