Paul Merson has written in The Daily Star that Aston Villa should not have appointed Remi Garde as their manager.
Garde took over at Villa in November following the dismissal of Tim Sherwood. The Villans were struggling under the former Tottenham Hotspur boss, but results and performances have not improved much under the Frenchman.
Former England international attacker Merson played with Garde at Arsenal during the 1996-97 season, and he believes that Villa should not have gone for the Frenchman.
Merson has also stated that Villa will get relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.
“Remi Garde has been a massive disaster at Aston Villa,” the former Villa attacker wrote in The Daily Star. “It was a huge mistake appointing him.
“They should have given it to a proven manager who knows the Premier League and has been in the fight before.”
“It will be a miracle if Villa stay up,” added Merson. “I look at that team and what have they got? None of those players are going to do anything special. Who have they got to rely on? I don’t see anyone.”
Villa are at the foot of the Premier League table at the moment and are in real danger of going down to the Championship at the end of the season.
The Villans have picked up just seven points from 17 matches so far this campaign and are as many as 10 points behind 17th-placed Newcastle United.
Garde’s side will take on West Ham United at Villa Park in the Premier League on Boxing Day.
