The Blues are just outside the play-off positions in the Championship, so will be hoping that any additions can help propel them into the top six.
Manager Gary Rowett has hinted that he wishes to add three new players to his Birmingham City squad during the January transfer window, the Birmingham Mail reports, as the Blues look to strengthen ahead of a potential promotion push.
A recent five-game winless run - that was only ended in their last game against Cardiff City - may have dented Birmingham's hopes of ending the year in the Championship play-off places, but it could have helped Rowett understand where his squad needs improvement.
"We know where we want to add players. We know we need one more extra body as a defender and I think in an ideal world we need two attacking players," he explained to the Mail.
"Obviously that could fill any one of four positions.
"We would like two attacking players to give us more goals and more options and I think that's certainly something we'd like after Christmas is to have more options."
Although defensively the Blues have been strong this season, it is not a huge surprise that the manager wishes to add extra depth in that area of the field. The club have recorded an impressive total of six clean sheets in the division this season. However, that is only half the number that league leaders Middlesbrough have managed.
While the Midlands club have been strong at the back - but perhaps need that one addition to make them even stronger - their problems with finding the back of the net make it crucial for Rowett to bolster his ranks.
Currently, the Blues are the joint lowest scorers in the top half of the table, and their top goalscorer, Clayton Donaldson, has just five strikes to his name.
And while the Jamaica international may not have been prolific, he is the only forward to have scored for the club this season, which has been extremely noticeable in recent weeks as Donaldson has not played since the 5-2 thrashing of Fulham in early November due to injury.
If the Blues wish to be in the mix come the end of the season, then Rowett surely needs to find at least one new striker capable of carrying the burden along with Donaldson.
