Payet, 28, had enjoyed a remarkable season with Marseille last term, racking up seven goals and an astonishing 16 assists before leaving his native France for West Ham.
Billed as the club's marquee signing of the summer, Payet quickly set about proving why he was so highly rated, and became an instant fan favourite at Upton Park.
With five goals and three assists in 12 games this season, Payet has been sensational - but an ankle injury suffered against Everton back in November has ruled him out until the early stages of 2016.
West Ham have failed to score in their last three games, and it's clear that Slaven Bilic's men are missing the creative spark that Payet provides in midfield.
Now, a number of Sky Sports pundits have been asked who the signing of the season has been so far, and despite missing nearly two months of the campaign, Payet has been nominated by pundit Paul Merson.
Merson stated that Payet has been 'world class' for West Ham, and believes rival managers will be wondering why they didn't manage to sign Payet ahead of the Hammers.
"I think he's been absolutely outstanding, before he got injured" said Merson. "Because he's got injured, we've sort of took our eye off him now, but before that he was outstanding. I think there will be a lot of football managers around the country thinking to their scouting system, why didn't we get him, or why weren't we mentioned about him? He has been as world-class as you can get," he added.
Fans will be desperate to see Payet return, but West Ham can't risk rushing him back and increase the chances of another injury - though when he does come back, bringing a player of Payet's class in to the side should give the Hammers an attacking boost they need.
