Four players combine to embarrass Manchester United and Louis van Gaal

Manchester United's lack of goals is highlighted by the players they sold.

Manchester United are a team in need of goals - but did they give too many away this summer?

The Red Devils allowed a number of talented players to leave the club, and barely strengthened aside from clouding the mix in central midfield.

Anthony Martial has been a worthwhile addition, but with Wayne Rooney either injured of playing woefully, the Frenchman has been asked to do too much, and as Thierry Henry told SkySports on Monday Night Football, is being played out of position.

United's entire squad have scored 35 goals this season so far - a number which has been eclipsed by the figure netted by four players they sold in the transfer window.

Robin van Persie was sold far too cheaply, and the club clearly gave up on Angel di Maria too soon. Nani and Chicharito were probably right to leave when they did, but the Mexican's prolific performances for Bayer Leverkusen have placed question marks over this assertion.

Debate over who should and should not have been sold is now moot, but their displays shine a light on the fact United need to improve, and buy more players.

The Red Devils can rarely swing a deal on the cheap, but need to bring in reinforcements in January to ensure they achieve at the minimum, a top four finish.
