Barnsley supporters have had a mixed reaction on Twitter, after Newcastle United terminated Ivan Toney’s loan spell at Oakwell this afternoon.
Toney was due to stay with the League One side until January, but an injury crisis at Newcastle has forced Steve McClaren’s side to end the deal early.
With Papiss Cisse out injured, Newcastle were seemingly fearful that they would be left short of options up front, and it seems that Toney will go back on their bench for their fixtures over the Christmas period.
The former Northampton Town man has already been handed plenty of chances in the Magpies’ match day squad, and he has actually made three senior appearances to date.
While on loan at Barnsley he was playing more regularly, however, and he seemed to have established his place in Lee Johnson’s starting line-up.
Toney played eight times while on loan with the Tykes, and he hit the back of the net on two occasions.
Without Toney, Barnsley will have the likes of Sam Winnall and Simeon Jackson competing for a place up front in their line up.
Toney leaves Barnsley with the side sitting in 21st place in the League One table.
Here is the best reaction from Barnsley fans on social media site Twitter to Toney’s recall.
Oh no? Toney has been recalled by #NUFC where will we get our goals from now.....— James cureton (@James_cureton) December 23, 2015
Hardly a huge blow losing Toney. May have to give 18 goal striker a go in a top 2.— RedWilkie (@redwilkie) December 23, 2015
Ivan Toney recalled by Newcastle. Perhaps it's just as well for the young lad. Lets face it LJ has ruined every striker at Oakwell.— DAVID BIRKETT BSC (@dave_the_tyke) December 23, 2015
My only issue with Toney going back is Winnall is guaranteed to start Boxing Day now— Matt Moore (@mattbfc93) December 23, 2015
Ivan Toney gone. Time for other strikers to step up to the plate. #barnsleyfc— Lewis Robinson (@thebarnsleyboy) December 23, 2015
@bfc_official I wonder if the loss of him will make any difference to our abysmal record?— Patricia McDermott (@tm014d1009) December 23, 2015
A squad should be built with your own players, loans should only be added either due to injuries or to increase competition...— Jake Warrior (@TykesTalk) December 23, 2015
...because if the players get recalled, you end up with no Plan B. You've dug your own grave here @bfc_official— Jake Warrior (@TykesTalk) December 23, 2015
