Aston Villa boss Remi Garde admits admiration for Bordeaux playmaker Wahbi Khazri

The 24-year-old Tunisia international has recently been linked with a January move to Villa Park.

Aston Villa manager Remi Garde has admitted to the Daily Mail that he is a big admirer of reported transfer target Wahbi Khazri.

Garde has allegedly been promised January funds by Villa chairman Randy Lerner to strengthen his struggling side and the likes of RMC Sport have claimed this week that he has his sights set on Khazri in particular.

The former Lyon boss saw plenty of the 24-year-old Bordeaux playmaker while managing in Ligue 1 and even revealed that he tried to sign him during his time at the Stade Gerland.

However, he was keeping tight-lipped on whether he would be making another run at the Tunisia international’s £6 million-rated signature when the winter transfer window opens next month, telling the Daily Mail: “He's a player that I know well because before he left Bastia for Bordeaux I was interested in him with Lyon.

“He's a good player but I don't know the situation with Bordeaux. I don't want to disrespect the club because he's their player and he's under contract.”

Khazri originally joined Bordeaux from Ligue 1 counterparts Bastia in July 2014 and has since made 59 total appearances for the club, while recording 15 goals and 13 assists.

The Corsican-born attacker, who earned one cap for France Under-21s before switching his international allegiances to Tunisia in late 2012, has also netted eight times in 22 games for the Eagles of Carthage and featured at the past two African Cup of Nations.

Villa assistant manager Reginald Ray previously worked with the pacey wide man at Bastia and has given Garde the full lowdown on him ahead of a potential approach.

The Frenchman added: “I have more important information about him, because when you work with a player for a long time in training sessions, you know the way he behaves and whether he could settle into another country.”

Capable of playing in a variety of attacking positions, Khazri would certainly be an exciting addition to the Villa squad given his recent exploits in the French top-flight, but whether Garde can convince him to swap Bordeaux for a relegation battle in England remains to be seen.

According to RMC Sport’s report, the claret and blues do plan to include a relegation release clause in his proposed contract after holding initial talks with his representatives, but the Ajaccio native could well end up holding out for a move to a more stable situation instead.
