Burnley midfielder Joey Barton has named Newcastle United defender Fabricio Coloccini among the best players he has played in his career so far, as reported by Sky Sports.
Barton and Coloccini played together at Newcastle for three years from 2008 to 2011.
“Ferocious character, the year we got promoted and the year we were first back in the Premier League he was outstanding, following a really tough start to his Newcastle career,” the Englishman told Sky Sports. “He struggled in his first year.”
Coloccini is one of the longest-serving players at Newcastle, having joined the Magpies from Spanish club Deportivo La Coruna in the summer of 2008.
The Argentine central defender has struggled for consistency in recent years, but he is a leader and remains an important part of the team.
The 33-year-old has scored one goal in 16 Premier League appearances for Newcastle so far this season.
The veteran centre-back has a pass accuracy of 83% and a shot accuracy of 50%, and has won 23 headers, three dribbles and 15 tackles.
Newcastle are 17th in the Premier League table at the moment with 17 points from as many matches, just two points above the relegation zone.
