Darren Gough says Premier League star must be laughing at Aston Villa

Darren Gough says one of Leicester City's star players must be laughing at Premier League basement boys Aston Villa.

The Foxes are top of the table for Christmas with an astonishing 38 points having tasted defeat just once in this most remarkable of Premier League seasons.

Claudio Ranieri's men are now being considered genuine title contenders by many fans and pundits after their latest wins over Chelsea and then Everton last time out.

While Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez have been the ones getting all the headlines thanks to their phenomenal goalscoring exploits, a number of other Leicester players have been just as crucial.

It'll be Albright-on the night

And speaking on talkSPORT former cricketer Gough has been highlighting one in particular, namely former Villa youth academy graduate turned Foxes star Marc Albrighton.

The winger was released by basement boys Villa last summer despite being with the club since he was nine years old.

The former England Under-21 international joined Leicester on a free transfer and has never looked back while Villa have plumbed new depths and look certainties for relegation.

Praising Leicester's fairytale season, Gough said the 25-year-old must be amused with how things have turned out.

"Some of the Leicester players were not even wanted by their old clubs," Gough said on talkSPORT.

"No offence to those players, but I'm just saying, it's remarkable really.

"You look at someone like Marc Albrighton.

"Not wanted by Aston Villa, released, I tell you what he must be laughing at Aston Villa now the way he has been playing, astonishing."

Villa mistake

Albrighton has been a major factor in Leicester's amazing year.

First the pacy winger played a key role in helping the Foxes avoid the drop last season and is now reaching new levels as the Foxes look to cause one of the biggest upsets in top flight history by competing for the title.

Former Villa boss Tim Sherwood even conceded the club made a mistake in discarding of the homegrown player in an interview with the Daily Star back in September, saying: "He has taken the knock of being released from the club or being disposed of and bounced back.

"That can happen. If we had a crystal ball we would know differently but unfortunately for Villa it looks like it might not have been the correct decision."
