The defender has come in for praise after returning from the cold at Villa Park.
The Scottish full back’s career at Villa Park looked to be over before this season, with him being cut from the squad and sent out on loan.
He has since returned though and is now a regular in the side, putting in a series of decent performances despite his side’s overall struggles.
And Thompson has praised him for his attitude, saying he has been their most consistent player overall in what has been a disastrous campaign so far for them.
“It says a lot when this player was ousted, I don’t even think he had a squad number at one point,” he told Soccer Saturday.
“He’s probably been their most consistent player, not great, but he is their best player at the moment.”
“He looks to do his defensive duties, and going forward he’s the best at crossing the ball and giving their attackers a chance. He has been their best.”
While Villa fans will be pleased that Hutton has shown signs of progression this season, they will be concerned that it is him that is doing so.
Having their full back as the best performer in the side goes to demonstrate just how poor the rest of the squad have been playing, and goes someway to explaining why they are in this situation.
They will be hoping that some of those stars brought in for big sums in the summer, can take the crown off the Scot in the second half of the campaign.
