Carragher admits Arsenal now favourites, but writes off their 2016/17 title challenge

Jamie Carragher says Arsenal are favourites to win the league, and need to make this opportunity count.

Former Premier League defender Jamie Carragher says Arsenal need to make this opportunity to win the Premier League title count.

The Gunners beat Manchester City 2-1 to extend the gap over Manuel Pellegrini's side to four points - although they remain two points behind surprise leaders Leicester City.

Speaking to SkySports Monday Night Football, ex-Liverpool ace Carragher said that Arsene Wenger's side remain favourites, but does not expect them to be in the same position next season.

He said: "The four point cushion they've got, and the way other sides just playing, they are just favourites.

"Do I see them being in this position this time next year? Probably not.

"Other sides will strengthen player wise and manager wise, so no because I don't think they have the best team or the best squad, but they are playing the best right now."

Carragher is alluding to the possible arrival of Pep Guardiola to the Premier League, with both Manchester clubs potential destinations, as is Chelsea, who have a vacancy after sacking Jose Mourinho.

Television money means there will be more to spend than ever before, but as far as it goes this season, the title is up for grabs.

Chelsea are already out of it after their disastrous start to the season, City have lost five games already, and Manchester United are in disarray.

A lot can happen between now and the end of this season, and it could be Arsenal's to lose. There is plenty of football to be played this time around, but as Carragher points out, failing to press home over the second half of the campaign could haunt the Gunners next year.
