Why Derby County's signing of Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle would seal their promotion

Derby County are said to be interested in signing Crystal Palace's Dwight Gayle on loan in January.

If Derby County are able to sign Dwight Gayle in the January transfer window, as the Sun suggests, it could be the transfer which ensures they are a Premier League club next season.

Derby are currently in the top two but Paul Clement is said to be keen to add to his squad at the next available opportunity.

The addition of Gayle would be a real signal of their intent, and it would be as close to a guarantee of goals that they could sign.

Although Chris Martin has performed admirably this season, his record in front of goal is not particularly impressive, and Gayle could be the man to inject the threat to get them over the line at the business end of the campaign.

The 25-year-old is a dead-eye finisher, and although he has fallen out of favour at Palace this season he has finished as their top scorer in both of the last two campaigns.

Gayle has netted 12 times in 23 Premier League starts for the Eagles, and this ratio would likely increase at a lower level and in a team which plays on the front foot.

Gayle has only had a brief amount of Championship experience so far, when with Peterborough United back in 2013, but his impact was huge.

The finisher joined a Posh team that looked doomed, but his 13 goals in 28 appearances almost kept them in England’s second tier.

At that time, Gayle had never previously played above League Two level, but with two years of Premier League football now under his belt his progression should have been vast.

Gayle should also receive more chances at Derby than he ever did in Posh’s team, which was built to play on the counter.

The Rams will be keen not to disrupt their attacking set-up, but when a striker of Gayle’s quality is on the market it only makes sense to sign them, and he would surely be a fantastic addition at the iPro Stadium if a deal could be completed.
