Signing Aston Villa's Gary Gardner would significantly boost Forest’s playoff chances

Nottingham Forest should make a move for Aston Villa’s Gary Gardner.

As reported by HITC Sources on Saturday afternoon, a number of clubs are interested in taking Aston Villa’s Gary Gardner on loan during the January transfer window.

The talented defensive midfielder has yet to feature for Villa this season, succumbing to a long-term knee injury and missing out on Villa’s 25-man Premier League squad.

It has been a tough time for the 23-year-old, yet his rehabilitation has gone well and he could be back in action soon though it’s questionable whether he will turn out for Villa.

Reports hint at a potential loan switch in January, and one club who would undoubtedly benefit from his services is Championship outfit Nottingham Forest.

The Reds had Gardner for a period on loan last season, and the midfielder struck up quite a relationship with the Forest supporters following a number of impressive displays.

Dougie Freedman’s men made a slow start to the campaign, however they have since embarked on a five-game unbeaten run and sit just six points shy of the playoffs.

Despite being under an embargo, Forest have done well to make the most of their situation and current form suggests that a push for the top six in the coming months is very much on the cards.

Signing Gardner would significantly help their cause, and it’s a deal which would make perfect sense considering the East Midlands outfit are only eligible to bring players in on loan.

Gardner would provide further options for Forest. He would take the burden off David Vaughan and offer the necessary protection so that Henri Lansbury can operate further up the field.

The City Ground club know all about his qualities from last season, and he would without doubt be welcomed back with open arms by both the club’s staff and supporters.
