Ian Wright on whether Arsenal can beat Barcelona

Camp Nou, Barcelona - Mes Que un Club

Arsenal have been drawn to Barcelona in the Champions League knockout stage.

Former player Ian Wright feels Arsenal have the best opportunity to beat Barcelona as they have nothing to lose going in to their Champions League knockout encounter, he told the Fletch and Sav show.

Arsenal’s reward for beating Olympiakos 3-0 in Greece and securing a spot in the latter stage of the Champions League was to draw out reigning champions Barcelona in the round of 16.

The Catalans are many people’s favourites to retain the trophy as forward trio Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar continue their blistering 2015 form which has seen them pocket four trophies thus far.

When quizzed on the Gunners’ prospects, Ian Wright feels the La Liga giants will be wary of his former side but pulls no punches when describing Barca as the yardstick for all of their competitors.

“With the fittest team Arsenal can put out I think Barcelona would be wary of them. You can beat them but you’re talking about the best, Barcelona are the yardstick,” he explained.

“Arsenal have got nothing to lose going in to that game because nobody expects them to get through, it’s the best opportunity to try and beat Barcelona.”

Arsenal’s task of beating Barcelona will be all the more difficult considering regular midfield duo Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla aren’t expected to recover from injury in time to face them.

It leaves the Gunners quite short on midfield options, and with the Catalans looking to monopolise possession and strike quickly, missing a key holding midfielder like Coquelin is a huge blow.

Luis Enrique’s men currently top La Liga and are firm favourites to retain their title having already played Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, Valencia and Celta Vigo away from home.
