Toby Alderweireld has told the Daily Mirror that the glowing reference he received about Tottenham Hotspur helped convince him to move to White Hart Lane during the summer transfer window.
Alderweireld opted for a move to North London instead of his former loan club Southampton before the season started, and his decision has been proved correct.
The central defender has played a key role as Tottenham have climbed into the top four and Alderweireld says that he is delighted to be part of Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.
“I knew about the club from Jan [Vertonghen], Moussa Dembele and Nacer Chadli when we met up with the Belgium squad,” Alderweireld said.
“They said it was a fantastic club. With the training complex and the new stadium plans, the whole package is there. I wanted to be part of it and I think I made a very good choice.”
Alderweireld has been part of Tottenham’s first choice central defensive duo, alongside Jan Vertonghen.
The pair have been a formidable obstacle for opposing sides to overcome and have been the foundation upon which Tottenham have built their recent success.
The Lilywhites have the joint-second best defensive record in the Premier League, having let in just 14 goals in their first 17 matches.
Tottenham’s strong back-line has elevated them into the top four, and they will be determined to strengthen their Champions League qualification bid over the hectic Christmas period.
