Sunderland and Chelsea went head-to-head this weekend, but what did Black Cats fans make of the Swedish player's contribution?
Sunderland faced Chelsea at arguably the worst possible time, with the faltering champions freed from their shackles following the departure of manager Jose Mourinho.
Had the Black Cats travelled to Stamford Bridge a week earlier they would have taken on a Blues side struggling for form, but instead it was all too easy for the hosts, who played under the watchful eye of their new boss Guus Hiddink.
Early goals from Branislav Ivanovic and Pedro set Chelsea on their way and an Oscar penalty shortly after half-time put the game to bed, with Fabio Borini’s strike a mere consolation.
The Sunderland forward had come on at the break, replacing the disappointing Ola Toivonen, and the 29-year-old Swede came in for plenty of criticism both during and after the match.
While fellow midfielder Yann M’Vila continues to impress, doing all he can to keep Sunderland in the top flight, Toivonen has done little either up front or more recently in the centre of the park.
After the match we took to Twitter to see what Sunderland fans thought of Toivonen’s latest performance and you can read a selection of what we found below:
#SAFC Apart from the Villa game, Toivonen has bought very little to the team— Daniel Jenks (@DanielJenks89) December 19, 2015
If we've any intention of staying up we need to STOP playing wastes of a shirt like Toivonen and Rodwell. We shoot ourselves in the foot!— e-Sunderland (@e_sunderland) December 19, 2015
Ola Toivonen is a waste of space in our team like— ChristianJSwalwell (@ChristianJS94) December 20, 2015
The tracking of Pedro, or lack of from M'Villa & Toivonen for Chelsea's 2nd yesterday was shameful.— Brad Dobbing (@DiegoMaradobbn) December 20, 2015
@safc761 yeah, yet again poor defending,Coates was still ill, toivonen God only knows why he even starts— kieran (action) (@kie123star) December 20, 2015
A huge part of the problem is in midfield M'Vila was hung out to dry by Toivenen and Rodwell meaning the defence had no protection #SAFC— Dan (@dan_safc3) December 20, 2015
Fair to say, we've all seen more than enough of Ola Toivonen this season to appreciate he is not PL standard. You'd hope Big Sam has too.— Safc-Fans (@SafcFans) December 19, 2015
